More About Us
Quick Facts
Location:
Halifax, Nova Scotia, located at 1970 Gottingen St, Halifax, NS B3J 3Y2.
Facility Details:
A 50-metre pool (one of only two in the Halifax Regional Municipality) featuring six lanes with a movable bulkhead.
History:
The pool opened on May 25, 1968, as a joint project of the federal, provincial, and municipal governments for the 1969 Canada Summer Games.
History and Legacy
Centennial Pool has been a cornerstone of our community since 1968, originally built as part of Canada’s Centennial celebrations and designed to host the aquatic events for the 1969 Canada Games. Over the years, it has been the training ground for generations of swimmers, divers, and water polo athletes, becoming a hub for both competitive and recreational aquatic programs. Its beautiful architecture, with high ceilings and natural light, has made it a unique and welcoming space for everyone who steps through our doors.
In recent years, there were plans to replace the pool, which put the future of this historic facility in question. Thanks to the dedication and advocacy of Save Centennial Pool and the community, these plans have been put on hold, giving us the opportunity to reimagine Centennial Pool for today and the future.
This is a time to celebrate Centennial Pool with fresh eyes, honouring its legacy while making thoughtful changes that ensure it remains one of the best aquatic sport and recreation facilities in the city.
Governance
Centennial Pool is operated by the Centennial Pool Association, a non-profit made up of user groups and community members, with support from the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Together, they help ensure the pool continues to serve the community for generations to come.
